Dr Donald Lawrie

Donald is a Chartered Patent Attorney, European Patent Attorney and a European Trade Mark and Design Attorney. He has a BSc. (Hons.) in Chemistry and a Ph.D. in Chemistry, from the Universities of Glasgow and Newcastle upon Tyne, respectively. Before founding Lawrie IP in 2010, Donald worked for one of the UK and Europe’s largest firms of patent and trade mark attorneys.

Donald works in the fields of biotechnology, chemistry, chemical engineering, medical devices, and general mechanical devices. He has particular expertise in oil and gas technologies, compositions of matter, formulations, food technologies, chemical apparatus, organic semi-conductors, biofuels and renewable energies, polymers, chemical processes, pharmaceuticals, new (medical) uses of known materials, nucleic and amino acid based materials, functional materials, orthopaedic devices and respiratory protection equipment.

Donald specialises in advising businesses on protecting their IP in a way that is appropriate and proportionate to their commercial plans. His practice areas include drafting and prosecution of global patent families, preparing and filing of registered designs, due diligence reviews, freedom to operate opinions, infringement opinions, validity opinions, entitlement actions, ownership advice, advising on IP clauses in agreements, IP audits, vendor IP reports and advising on preparation for investment or sale.

Dr Craig Hutchison

Craig has a BSc. (Hons.) in Applied Physics and a Ph.D. in Electronic and Electrical Engineering, both from the University of Strathclyde. He is a qualified European Patent Attorney, Chartered UK Patent Attorney and a European Trade Mark and Design Attorney. Before joining Lawrie IP, he spent over ten years working for one of the UK and Europe’s largest firms of patent and trade mark attorneys.

Craig works in the fields of physics, electrical engineering and mechanical engineering, with particular expertise in oil and gas technologies, sonar imaging, retinal imaging, robotics, prosthetics, automotive engineering, cycling and fishing componentry, advanced coated films, and construction technologies.

His practice areas include drafting and prosecution of global patent families, due diligence reviews, freedom to operate opinions, infringement opinions and contentious proceedings before the Opposition Divisions and Boards of Appeal of the European Patent Office.

Sharon Mackison

Sharon is a Chartered Trade Mark Attorney and a European Trade Mark and Design Attorney. She has a MA (Hons.) in French Language and Literature from the University of Glasgow. Before joining Lawrie IP in 2013, Sharon worked for one of the UK and Europe’s largest firms of patent and trade mark attorneys.

Sharon works in a wide variety of fields. She has particular experience with clients in the areas of pharmaceuticals, medical apparatus, software and mobile apps, oil and gas, clothing and accessories, food and drink, retail, marketing and business administration, financial services, design and development services and renewable energy.

Sharon specialises in advising clients on how best to protect their trade marks and how to enforce registered and unregistered rights. Her practice areas include clearance searching, filing and prosecution of applications in the UK, Europe and internationally, filing and defending oppositions, invalidity and revocation actions, arranging co-existence agreements, providing infringement advice, providing ownership advice and conducting IP audits. Sharon also advises on copyright issues and prepares and files registered design applications.

Dr Diane Cameron

Diane has a BSc. (Hons.) in Chemistry with Medicinal Chemistry and a Ph.D. in Chemistry, both from the University of Glasgow.

Diane is a Chartered Accountant and is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland. Diane trained with a Big Four firm of accountants and worked in the higher education sector prior to joining Lawrie IP.

Diane manages all aspects of the company’s finances, banking and insurance.  In addition, in her role as Company Secretary, Diane ensures the company’s ongoing compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements.

Jim Robertson

Jim is a Chartered Patent Attorney, European Patent Attorney and a European Design Attorney, with over 25 years’ experience. He has an MA in Natural Sciences (specialising in molecular and cellular biology) from the University of Cambridge.

Jim heads up the Lawrie IP life sciences team, and loves to work with his clients to help their businesses thrive – be that helping to protect their products and technologies with the drafting, filing and prosecution of patent applications, managing their patent portfolios, handling contentious proceedings such as oppositions and revocations, undertaking due diligence on commercial transactions, performing freedom-to-operate (FTO) work so that they can take products to market and proactively deal with any problems that might be in the way, through to enforcing their intellectual property to prevent its misuse.

Jim’s primary technical fields are in diagnostics and therapeutics, molecular and cellular biology, antigens and antibody-based technologies, recombinant proteins and peptides, microbiology, medical devices, digital healthtech, synthetic biology (synbio), personalised medicine, regenerative medicine, agritech, plants and biopesticides. Jim is also a member of the Life Sciences Committee at the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys (CIPA).

Rachel Denholm

Rachel is a Chartered Trade Mark Attorney and a European Trade Mark and Design Attorney. She has a degree in Law (LLB) from the University of Dundee. Before joining Lawrie IP in 2020, Rachel worked for one of the UK and Europe’s largest patent and trade mark firms in both its London and Scottish offices.

Rachel is experienced in dealing with global brands and advises clients on all aspects of trade mark portfolio management on an international basis, including clearance searches, filing and prosecuting trade mark applications, conducting IP audits, filing and defending oppositions and providing strategic advice in relation to disputes. Having worked in full service law firms, Rachel has also assisted with IP elements of corporate transactions, including acquisitions and providing support in matters of due diligence.

Rachel has worked for a variety of clients across a wide range of sectors including telecommunications, fashion, food and drink, pharmaceuticals and financial services and since relocating to Scotland has additionally advised a number of clients in the engineering, oil and gas and medical fields.

Shirley Collins

Shirley is a Chartered Trade Mark Attorney and a European Trade Mark and Design Attorney. Before joining Lawrie IP in 2015, Shirley worked for two leading South African IP firms and for one of the UK and Europe’s largest firms of patent and trade mark attorneys.

Shirley works in a wide variety of fields. She has particular experience with clients in the financial, educational, charitable, environmental, oil and gas, renewable energy, retail, marketing, business administration and design and development sectors, and in the areas of food and drink, clothing and accessories, cosmetics, software, and mobile applications.

Shirley specialises in advising clients on protection and enforcement of their registered and unregistered trade marks both locally and internationally. Her practice areas include clearance searching, filing and prosecution of applications in the UK, Europe and internationally, filing and defending oppositions, invalidity and revocation actions, providing infringement and dispute resolution advice, recordal of registerable transactions worldwide, IP Audits, and general trade mark portfolio management. Kirsten Coetzee

Kirsten is a Chartered Trade Mark Attorney and a European Trade Mark and Design Attorney. He has a MA (Hons.) in Psychology from the University of Dundee, and obtained his Law degree (LLB) from the University of Glasgow. Before joining Lawrie IP in 2017, Kirsten worked for one of the UK and Europe’s largest firms of patent and trade mark attorneys.

Kirsten works in a wide variety of fields. He has particular experience with clients in the areas of food and drink, software and mobile apps, oil and gas, clothing and accessories, pharmaceuticals, medical apparatus, retail, sport and leisure, marketing and business administration, financial services, design and development services, manufacturing and renewable energy.

Anders Jensen

Anders has a M.Sc. in Engineering from the Technical University of Denmark. He is a qualified European Patent Attorney.

Before joining Lawrie IP he spent seven years working for several of the UK’s largest firms of patent and trade mark attorneys. Prior to that, he worked as a Patent Examiner for the Danish Patent and Trademark Office.

Anders works in the fields of electronic and electrical engineering, physics, semiconductors, sensor technologies, optics and imaging, photolithography, wireless network technologies, with particular expertise in software and web-based inventions.

His practice areas include drafting and prosecution of global patent families, due diligence reviews, freedom to operate opinions, infringement opinions, IP audits and advising on software related patenting issues.

Dr Chris Martin

Chris has a MEng. in Electronic and Electrical Engineering and a Ph.D. in Electronics and Nanoscale Engineering, both from the University of Glasgow.

Before joining Lawrie IP, he spent two years working as a Research Associate at the University of Glasgow, where he was part of an inter-disciplinary research project working on a portable electronic sensing platform to detect the metabolites present in human blood.

Chris works in the fields of electronic and electrical engineering, biosensors, nanofabrication techniques, mechanical engineering, physics, advanced coated films, sonar imaging, robotics, oil and gas technologies, construction technology, automotive engineering, retinal imaging, and prosthetics.

Dr Samantha Moreton

Samantha has a BSc. (Hons.) in Chemistry with Medicinal Chemistry from the University of Glasgow and a Ph.D. in Nanochemistry from the University of Strathclyde.

Before joining Lawrie IP, Samantha spent two years working as an Analytical Chemist for a contract research organisation specialising in the analysis of pharmaceutical and agrochemical products, where she worked closely with clients to produce reports to support the global registration of products.

Samantha works in the fields of nanochemistry, biotechnology, medical devices, chemistry, formulations, pharmaceuticals, biofuels and renewable energies, organic semi-conductors, polymers and chemical processes.

Flora Hachemi

Flora has a Masters (LLM) in French and English Law with a speciality in Intellectual Property Law from Université Paris Nanterre (France) and an LLM in Intellectual Property & the Digital Economy from the University of Glasgow. She has successfully completed the Bournemouth University Postgraduate Certificate in Intellectual Property and is now undertaking the Professional Certificate in Trade Mark Practice at Nottingham Trent University. Before joining Lawrie IP, Flora worked for three years as a CIPA qualified Patent Administrator for one of the UK and Europe’s largest firms of patent and trade mark attorneys.

Flora works in a wide variety of fields. She has particular experience with clients in the food and drink industry, clothing and accessories, cosmetics, retail, marketing and business administration, design and development services and charitable services.

Dr Fiona McLachlan

Fiona has a BSc. (Hons.) in Cognitive Neuroscience from the University of Manchester and a Ph.D. in Neurogenetics from the University of Edinburgh.  Her research focussed on neurodevelopmental disorders including epilepsy, autism and intellectual disability.

Before joining Lawrie IP, Fiona worked as a researcher in Germany for a pharmaceutical company, where she specialised in the treatment of neurodegenerative disorder Alzheimer’s Disease.

Fiona works in the fields of  biotechnology, medical devices, chemistry, pharmaceuticals, biofuels and genetic engineering.

Her practice areas include drafting, prosecuting patent applications from a variety of international territories, IP audits, infringement and validity opinions, freedom to operate assessments, prior art reviews, filing registered designs and IP ownership advice.

Zahra Panchbhaya

Zahra is a Trainee Trade Mark Attorney (Part-Qualified). She has a LLB (Hons.) in Law (Scots and English Dual Qualifying) from the University of Dundee and has successfully completed the Trade Mark Law and Practice PGCert at Queen Mary University of London.

Zahra advises clients on the protection of their trade marks and how to enforce their registered and unregistered rights. Her practice areas include clearance searching, filing and prosecution of applications in the UK, Europe and internationally, filing and defending oppositions, invalidity and revocation actions, arranging co-existence agreements, providing infringement advice, providing ownership advice and conducting IP audits. Zahra also advises on copyright issues and prepares and files registered design applications.

Rowena Wood

Rowena has over ten years’ experience in the field of intellectual property. Before joining Lawrie IP, Rowena worked for one of the UK and Europe’s largest firms of patent and trade mark attorneys. She has also worked for a firm of patent and trade mark attorneys in Australia providing both Australian and New Zealand IP services to their clients.

Rowena is a qualified Patent Administrator, having obtained the CIPA Certificate in Patent Administration, and provides full administrative support to the Directors and attorneys at Lawrie IP. She also provides support to the firm’s Practice and Accounts team.

Rowena has extensive experience in patent, trade mark and design administration, formalities throughout the United Kingdom, Europe, United States of America, Australia and New Zealand. She also has a great deal of experience with global assignment recordal programs.

Elena McConnell

Elena has over ten years’ experience in the field of Intellectual Property. She has a Bachelor of Laws Degree from the University of Tirana, Albania and became a member of Tirana’s Chamber of Lawyers in 2006.

Before joining Lawrie IP, Elena worked for a large multinational firm of patent and trade mark attorneys. Prior to that, she worked as a Trade Mark Examiner and then as Head of Legal and International Affairs Department at the Albanian Patent and Trade Mark Office.

Elena is a qualified Patent Administrator, having obtained the CIPA Certificate in patent administration in 2016; and a qualified Trademark Administrator, having obtained the ITMA Administrators’ Certificate for trade marks in 2014.

Elena provides full administrative support to the firm’s Patent and Trade Mark Attorneys.

Kimberley Freeland

Kimberley has over eight years’ experience in the field of intellectual property. Before joining Lawrie IP, Kimberley worked for one of the UK and Europe’s largest firms of patent and trade mark attorneys. Prior to working in IP, she worked for over 6 years in Architecture and gained a qualification in Architectural Technology.

Kimberley qualified as a CIPA Patent Administrator having obtained the CIPA Introduction to Patent Administration certificate in 2016 and then in 2019 qualified as a certified CITMA paralegal. Kimberley provides paralegal support to our both our Patent and Trade Mark Attorneys.

Kimberley assists with administrative tasks throughout the lifetime of application for a range of our client’s portfolios in Patents, Trade Marks and Designs in the UK, Europe and foreign territories. Particularly arranging documents for signature, notarisation and legalisation, completing European validations and global assignment recordals.

Gillian Craig

Before joining Lawrie IP, Gillian had 5 years experience of the administration and strategic management of an IP portfolio, including domain names, copyright and patents, and advising the marketing teams on compliant advertising for a well known drinks company. Gillian qualified as a certified CITMA Paralegal in 2018 and provides support to our Trade Mark Attorneys. Prior to working in IP, Gillian worked within both HR and Legal functions in an administrative role.

Simon Taylor

Simon is a Professional Grade accredited member of the Chartered Institute for IT. He has extensive experience in business analysis, project management, continuous improvement, and data analysis. Simon has led operations and change management teams in multiple sectors, and had specialised in Intellectual Property for three years prior to joining Lawrie IP in 2020. At Lawrie IP, Simon leads the operations of the firm. This includes responsibility for business issue, information security and quality management systems.

Craig Sloey

Craig joined Lawrie IP in October 2019 and has nearly four years’ experience in the field of intellectual property. Before joining Lawrie IP, Craig previously worked for a company specialising in IP renewals, where he also provided other IP administrative services to attorneys around the world.

Day-to-day, he provides full administrative support to the firm’s Patent and Trade Mark Attorneys and is training to obtain the CIPA Certificate in Patent Administration.

Jemma Law

Jemma has a degree in Law (LLB) from Glasgow Caledonian and a Masters in International Relations from the University of Strathclyde. Since graduating in 2018, Jemma has worked within the Risk and Compliance department of an international law firm, where she analysed a variety of matters, including Intellectual Property. Jemma now works with Lawrie IP as a Records and Renewals Administrator providing support to the firm’s Trade Mark and Patent Attorneys.

Adam Ryan

Adam has a LLB (Hons.) in Scots Law, graduating from the University of Glasgow in 2017.  As part of his degree, Adam undertook a course studying Intellectual Property and Design at Honours level, whilst completing his Erasmus year abroad at the University of Gothenburg.
As a Records and Renewals Administrator at Lawrie IP, Adam is involved in checking, maintaining and updating the company’s internal records database.

Eileen Hastie

Eileen is a Chartered Certificated Accountant and a Scottish Law Accountant. She is a member of both the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants and the Society of Law Accountants in Scotland.

Before joining Lawrie IP, Eileen worked in the legal sector for 22 years with two of Scotland’s largest legal firms.

Eileen assists with the day-to-day running of all aspects of the accounts function.

Louise Greenshields

Louise has over eighteen years’ PA experience, and seven years’ marketing and communication experience. She has worked in a diverse range of industries including legal, asset management and construction consultancy, media, corporate hospitality, and the drinks industry. Before joining Lawrie IP, Louise spent twelve years working for one of the world’s leading asset management and construction consultancies where she carried out a variety of marketing, communication and PA roles.

Louise provides full administrative and secretarial support to the firm’s Trade Mark Attorneys.

Hannah Al-Ghazzewi

Hannah joined Lawrie IP in 2018 as Receptionist and Administrative Assistant. Hannah now provides administrative support to the firm’s Trade Mark Attorneys.

Hannah has several years of experience in reception and office management. She is now also assisting with file maintenance, proof-checking, and preparation of routine correspondence for attorney review.

Irene McKinlay

Irene has over 35 years’ PA experience within the legal profession.  Before joining Lawrie IP, Irene worked within the Corporate and Dispute Resolution Departments of one of Scotland’s largest legal firms.

Irene has a Paralegal Qualification in Debt Recovery and an Employment Law Certificate and provides full administrative and secretarial support to the firm’s Patent Attorneys.

Anne Douglas

Anne joined Lawrie IP in 2019 as Receptionist and Administrative Assistant. Anne manages our reception, provides administrative support to our attorneys and secretaries, and assists in ensuring that the office runs smoothly and efficiently.
