Copyright protects literary and artistic material, music, films, sound recordings and broadcasts, including software and multimedia. Copyright arises automatically, in that no publication or registration is required to secure it. Copyright only protects against copying, and does not protect against third parties independently creating identical or similar works.
When instructing third parties to carry out work on your behalf, particularly if you have commissioned a design, you should ensure that the copyright created is assigned to you – otherwise the third party may end up owning the copyright in the work that you have paid them to create.
